It Is Extremely Difficult To Define What Terrorism Is,

It is extremely difficult to define what terrorism is, and it is difficult to determine what may influence an individual to form or join a terrorist organization. A definition of terrorism that is often used is that terrorism is the threat or use of violence in order to pursue political and social objectives. By using violence, terrorist groups are often able to coerce their desired result because they leave the people and the authorities of the regions they attacked in fear. In the years after September 11th 2001 the United States waged a war on Iraq that was described as Operation Iraqi Freedom which was meant to rid Iraq of all weapons of mass destruction and help it rebuild its army. This war ended up not helping Iraq in the ways†¦show more content†¦In 2006 al-Qaeda became known as the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) and eventually took its final form as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). ISIL is believed to be a response to western military intervention in t he Muslim world. In fact, prior to the war in Iraq there was no Taliban in Pakistan and significant extremist groups. Also, before Operation Iraqi Freedom al-Qaeda did not even exist. This exemplifies the idea that whenever the United States gets involved in foreign affairs rebel groups form in response. Unfortunately, rather than take responsibility for the rise of ISIL, the United states only focuses on how they can get rid of the problem. This shows a lack of responsibility by the United States, and instills a level of distrust by United States citizens. ISIL groups have ravaged terror into this region since they were first established, and they have gotten more malicious in response to military endeavors in their country. For example, ISIL declared war on the Shiites in Iraq in response to their collaborations with the United States in attacking Sunni villages that were harboring ISIL members. This is believed to be a key event in the emergence of ISIL and the high interest tha t people had in joining.
